Caroline Easther & The Cinnamon Girls
This year Caroline Easther is stepping out from behind the drums from where for many years she has been driving the songs of acts such as The Chills, The Verlaines, Barry Saunders, Let’s Planet, Beat Rhythm Fashion and most recently Hobnail to perform songs from her new album Lucky. She has always written and sung her own songs, many of which appear on Let’s Planet’s recordings, but this is her first solo effort.
The album is a collection of 10 refreshingly melodic songs in the indie-pop/folk vein. There is a wonderful variety in the songs which feature Alan Galloway’s jangling, edgy electric guitar, licks of lap-steel, a plunkage of banjo, a visitation of recorders, swirls of melotron and piano accordion and some gorgeous acoustic piano . Caroline plays many of the instruments herself but there are many contributions from Wellington musicians including David Long, Barry Saunders, Alan Norman , Dave Berry and Paddy Burgin.
There is definitely a tint of Dunedin in the music but not a garage or bedroom in sight. The album was recorded and produced by The Muttonbird’s David Long in his studio in Owhiro Bay in Wellington. His vast experience in composition and production has given the album a worldly polish without knocking off any edges.
Caroline will be traveling with a 4-piece band – Caroline on vocals and acoustic guitar, Alan Galloway on electric guitar, Murray Costello on bass and Hamish Graham (Hobnail, Milk-Thistle) on drums.
