Join us for a creative, cultural experience where weaver Ara Swanney will inspire, educate and help you produce your own kete with creative flair.
This workshop is for beginners and perfect for anyone who wants to understand and learn about the overall kaupapa of weaving and help getting started on a project. For those with existing skills, Ara can also help you with an existing project or to get you to the next level.
The day includes how to harvest and care for harakeke plants, cut and prepare it for weaving and learn about the historical and current uses of the plant.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have:
• a basic understanding of the kaupapa of weaving
• understand tikanga maori relating to harvest and caring for your harakeke plant
• a piece of woven art you made yourself
• inspired skills to last a lifetime!
Please bring: Your own lunch – Teas and coffee available.
Also useful to bring a sharp knife, scissors, and old dining knife, strong spring pegs.

Ara Swanney began weaving 25 years ago at a workshop such as this. Since then she has learned with various tutors and has attended two years of the Raranga weaving course through Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, Porirua campus.
