SUMMARY:Brave Caitlin Smith’s Imaginary Band
DESCRIPTION:Brave Caitlin Smith’s Imaginary Band will be touring\, Caitlin Smith (piano and vocals)\, Lance McNicoll (guitar) and Steve Cournane (percussion and cymbals) a dream team performing jazz and folk music. \nCaitlin Smith’s latest album ‘You Have Reached Your Destination’ creates a multisensory universe unto itself – Braille and a tactile labyrinth within the cover art\, poetry and footsteps recorded between 14 originals. A mesmerizing\, prolific and passionate performer\, originals are sandwiched between the tastiest covers\, especially the repertoire of her spiritual parents Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. \nThe Caitlin Smith Trio (and earlier incarnation The Fondue Set) have held down well-loved residencies in Auckland for over two decades. 2021 marks the release of a collaboration/CD with the Auckland Jazz Orchestra ‘East of the Sun’. Caitlin Smith’s tour in 2020 with ARO was Covid interrupted so Caitlin Smith is delighted to be able to return. \nThe Band \nCaitlin Smith is a mesmerizing performer\, song-poet and story singer. Legally blind since birth\, she is a tireless advocate for accessibility issues and the healing and transformative power of creativity.\nA vocal and song-writing coach to many of our best known artists\, Caitlin Smith combines poetry and music in unforgettable performances that include her original compositions as well as covers penned by her musical heroes. \nLance McNicoll has been a professional musician in the Auckland scene for many years. \nSteve Cournane is a drummer and composer who began playing with the Alpaca Brothers in Dunedin\, in 1984. Steve won a Tui for NZ Jazz album of the year in 2002 for the album Stereoscope by CLBob. This group released three albums and performed relentlessly around the country over a ten-year period. In 2007 he moved to Lima\, Peru\, where he survived as a musician while studying the coastal Afro-Criolla music for another seven years. He moved to Auckland in 2017 and currently plays cajón with Isla Flamenca (with Ian Sinclair) and drum-kit with BOAT and Bill Direen. \nBookings at https://www.fairfieldnelson.org.nz/contact

SUMMARY:LIFE'S ABSURDITIES & OTHER STORIES
DESCRIPTION:Nelson resident Mary Glaisyer is old. Very old. Well 70 something\, if you really want to know. And she likes telling stories. She’s always told them. It’s one her raison d’etres\, (if you can have that in plural) and she has a few. Some of her stories are funny\, some are downright peculiar and some are just … well just Mary\, if you know what I mean. Come along for an evening of non-stop enjoyment. \nMary Glaisyer began performing standup comedy in her 70’s. She is by far the oldest beginner in the standup scene in Nelson\, which has only been going about three years\, mainly at the Liquid Bar in Bridge Street. \nMary was keen to try out a storytelling/standup show of her own\, so Fairfield House is hosting two performances with pianist Virginia Ward playing between Mary’s “sets.” \nWe need YOU to be in the audience! All proceeds will be going to the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust\, which “aims to increase the supply of quality\, affordable\, healthy homes and housing services for people/whanau in need.” \nDATES: Saturday April 10 – 7pm & Sunday April 11 – 2pm\nTICKETS: $10 www.trybooking.co.nz/GUO\nLimited seating. Bookings essential.

SUMMARY:French for Rabbits & Terrible Sons
DESCRIPTION:Wellington’s ethereal dream-pop gems French for Rabbits are pairing up with Terrible Sons for a weekend away in the South Island. They will present their dreamy\, perfectly-paired music to lucky audiences in Nelson\, Blenheim and Onekaka\, before French for Rabbits head off to perform at Wanaka’s Festival of Colour.\n_______________\nFrench for Rabbits released a handful of singles in 2020 – including the soaring chamber pop of ‘The Dark Arts’ in December which is the first single from their forthcoming album (due out later in 2021). On the tour they will be presenting new material alongside their intimately beautiful collection of previous releases.\nThe band are known for their welcoming presence\, animated banter and effortless songwriting – that spans both the intimate and expansive.\n______________\nTerrible Sons released their much anticipated EP ‘Mass’ in February. Having racked up over 18 million streams on previous singles\, it may come as a surprise that the Nettwerk-signed duo from Christchurch have never toured. The duo consists of LA Mitchell (Fly my Pretties) and Matt Barus (The Dukes).\nAbout Mass: “ ……. a stark\, quiet collection of deeply romantic songs that hark back to the sweeping indie glory of Kings of Convenience and Feist. It’s the kind of music that feels destined to soundtrack the idiosyncratic indie cinema of the mid-2000s. It’s luscious\, organic and so\, so intimate” – Tone Deaf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IprVIIbi6lE) \nEarlybird Tickets $25 at undertheradar\n Door sales $30;\n doors open 7pm; concert 7.30pm.

SUMMARY:Klezmer Rebs
DESCRIPTION:Klezmer Rebs are an 8 piece Wellington band formed in 2002 that plays (mostly) klezmer music\, an engaging style of world/folk music born out of the Yiddish/Jewish culture of eastern Europe in the 1800s and 1900s. Klezmer then went to America and in the early 1900s began to fuse with jazz and swing. There has been a worldwide revival of klezmer music since the 1980s. \nKlezmer Rebs instrumentation includes guitar\, mandolin\, clarinet\, violin\, accordion\, keyboards\, trombone\, helicon (like a tuba)\, string bass and vocals. Together the Klezmer Rebs capture the true klezmer spirit with songs of joy\, sorrow and rebellion. \nKlezmer Rebs have been shaking ‘tuchases’ (Yiddish for ‘bums’) in Wellington and places north and south since 2002. Over the years crowds danced to klezmer music in Palmerston North\, Greytown\, Whanganui\, New Plymouth\, Nelson\, Golden Bay\, Christchurch\, Dunedin and across the Wellington city and region. \nRecently the Rebs performed at the 2019 Luminate Festival in Takaka and at the 2018 Auckland Folk Festival.\nIn February 2010 the Rebs where honoured to perform for dignitaries at the opening of the Anne Frank Exhibition at Te Papa. \nHearing Klezmer Rebs live expect a big band and vocal arrangements of genuine old klezmer tunes – from the lively genuine Yiddish wedding music (freylachs and bulgars) to the delicate slice of life stories from the east European shtetl (ghettos). \nThe Rebs world music appeals to everyone. While many of songs are sung in Yiddish (that mostly-Germanic and very onomatopoeic language)\, they also perform partisan songs from Italy\, Russian folk tunes\, French chansons\, Latin cowboy love songs\, Argentine Yiddish Tangos and 1940s swing vocal songs. Their own quirky\, politically charged multi-lingual originals are some of the most popular crowd tunes. \nThe Rebs will perform in the Fairfield Coutyard – expect a night full of story. songs and dance. \nPlaying Russian Sher

SUMMARY:Polytropos
DESCRIPTION:New Zealanders Oscar West and Rennie Pearson are celebrating ten years of playing and touring together as the traditional music duo Polytropos. They have just released their first full-length album. \nMulti-instrumentalists West and Pearson are masterful\, passionate players of Celtic music arranged in an adventurous\, conversational style. Their infectious stage presence and musicality has been a hit with audiences since their debut concert at Wellington Folk Festival in 2011 and in the intervening years they have worked extensively as professional musicians both in New Zealand and internationally. \nThe name Polytropos – “the thing of many twists and turns” or “the much-wandering thing” – drives the spirit of West and Pearson’s unique instrumental arrangements and represents the journey each set creates for the listener. It also acknowledges the music’s own odyssey from the hills of Ireland and Scotland to the rugged\, natural landscapes of New Zealand. Their playing weaves together the tones of the wooden flute\, fiddle\, guitar\, smallpipes\, whistles and voice to produce thoughtful arrangements of melodies that are all at once curious\, pure and full of storytelling. \nPaddy Squared \nPaddy Fahey’s Jig
