SUMMARY:Voices from the Fox
DESCRIPTION:The Nelson Institute presents: Voices from the Fox\, stories of the characters associated with the Edwin Fox. \nSpeaker Nigel Costley\, author of Teak and Tide\, the history of this old ship on public display in Picton. \nBuilt in India 1853\, under the auspices of the East India Company\, the Fox had an astonishingly varied career\, carried troops to the Crimean War\, convicts to Western Australia and immigrants to New Zealand. \nThe saga of her rescue from near ruin in Shakespeare Bay to pride of place on Picton Harbour will also be told. \nThe Nelson Institute is one of the oldest secular community organizations in NZ – it was formed on May 17th 1841. Responsible for Nelson’s library and museum since very early in the European settlement\, the Institute has been at the core of the city’s cultural life. While it has been superseded in the delivery of these services\, the Nelson Institute shares with its forebears a reverence for the integrity of knowledge\, and that this knowledge can be used as a community building exercise. \nContact: thenelsoninstitute@gmail.com \nPhone president Nigel Costley: 03 548 3101. \n
