SUMMARY:Zen Buddhist Talk - Boundless Compassion within a Bounded World
DESCRIPTION:Geoffrey Shugen Arnold\, Roshi is the Abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery\, and the head of the Mountains and Rivers Order. \n“Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind created.” – The Dhammapada \nMost people\, at their core\, are caring\, kind and want to help others. This is compassion in Buddhism; to actively work to alleviate the suffering of others. However\, because of our self-clinging\, false views and attachments we don’t always feel and act this way. And even when our hearts are open\, we can feel stuck by others’ unwillingness or lack of capacity to change. We can feel overwhelmed by situations we want to change but have little ability to do so. \nThis evening talk and discussion will explore Buddhist practices for both cultivating loving kindness within ourselves and directing this to others. Drawing from the Buddha’s enlightened understanding of the power of mind\, we always have the ability to reach out to others through such practices\, even to those we will never meet. In this way\, the mind and world is transformed. \nEntry by koha

SUMMARY:One-day Retreat - The Liberating Path Within Life and Death
DESCRIPTION:With Geoffrey Shugen Arnold\, Roshi – the Head of the Mountains and Rivers Order\, abbot and resident teacher of Zen Mountain Monastery. \n“Liberation” means that in birth you are liberated from birth\, and in death you are liberated from death. Thus\, there is detachment from birth-and-death and penetration of birth-and-death. Such is the complete practice of the great way. There is letting go of birth-and-death and vitalising birth-and-death. Such is the thorough practice of the great way.” – Undivided Activity by Eihei Dogen \nFrom a Buddhist perspective\, the very fact of our being alive and our inevitable death makes our lives profoundly moral and spiritual in nature. Isn’t it these simple realities that inspire human beings to wonder and question about our lives and the world we live in? Yet\, they can also be sources of much fear and anxiety\, loss and grief. The Buddha was motivated in his path to enlightenment because of these very truths and taught that we can only find freedom when we turn towards life and death and see into their deeper meanings\, beyond ideas and philosophies. \nIn the one-day retreat\, we’ll study the teaching of 13th-century Zen Master Dogen\, entitled “Undivided Activity”\, and take up the questions\, teachings and practices that Buddhism offers us as a path. We’ll also discuss how to practice into our own aging\, sickness and death\, as well as how to be with others as they move through their stages of living and dying. \nCost: $100\, including a vegetarian lunch with gluten free and vegan options. \nVisit the website for further details here \n Enquiries: \nGwitha Kaido Nash \n021-121-8133 \nnelson@zen.org.nz

SUMMARY:One Day Silent Yoga & Meditation Retreat
DESCRIPTION:A day in silence creates the ideal conditions for self-remembrance\, deep rest and rejuvenation. This is an invitation and opportunity to connect with the joy and simplicity of Being. \nYoga is not a quick fix\, it is a lifelong journey and discipline. Through consistent practice\, we can start to touch deeper and more subtle aspects of our being. Meditation is an experiential exploration of the fundamental questions of life – ‘Who am I?’\, ‘What is this Existence?’. A day dedicated to silence\, can be a profound journey of self remembrance. \nWe guide and supervise all practices\, creating safe and supportive conditions for you to go deeper into your practice. The day will likely include Sun Salutations\, gentle Hatha Yoga including pranayama\, and short meditations including walking meditation. There will be some short talks on yogic philosophy as well. \nEvery aspect of the day is fully dedicated to creating the best conditions for the revelation of our true essence and the awakening of our hearts. \nMauna (Noble Silence): The observance of mauna is fundamental to creating the proper conditions to allow us to go deeper in our practice of meditation. Pausing social interaction allows the mental energies connected with communication to cease and be redirected to the practice of self exploration. \nThis format of retreat provides a great introduction to the practice of meditation for beginners and can also serve to enrich and refresh the practice of experienced meditators. \nFor more information & to book\, see the event page here. \nPrice: $108 (Includes simple & vegan Ayurvedic inspired breakfast\, lunch & dinner)
