SUMMARY:Good Habits - Folk-fusion from the UK
DESCRIPTION:After two years of the formative pandemic spent ‘happily stranded’ on tour in New Zealand\, Good Habits return to their Antipodean second home for a mighty tour that includes WOMAD\, Port Fairy Festival\, and supporting Tiki Taane (Trio’s Garden Bar\, Rarotonga)\, in anticipation of their new album release “Quarter-Life”\, due out in May 2024. \nIn the past year\, after leaving NZ\, Good Habits have performed at world famous festivals around Europe including Glastonbury (UK)\, Elfia (NL) and Cambridge Folk Festival (UK)\, to name a few. \nTheir award-winning\, genre-fusing sound has received international critical acclaim in the short 4 years they have been performing. Composed of Bonnie Schwarz (cello + vocals) and Pete Shaw (accordion)\, the pair mix virtuosic musicianship and vocal harmony with vivid storytelling\, drawing on their diverse musical tastes and weaving them into an action-packed narrative of folky goodness. \nWhilst ‘happily stranded’ in Aotearoa over 2020+21 due to the pandemic\, their touring in NZ was nonstop\, including performances at the country’s biggest festivals: Cuba Dupa\, NZ Festival of Lights\, and Lunasa. \nTheir “captivating” debut album\, “Going For Broke”\, recorded in Paekakariki\, received glowing international coverage with FRUK describing their breath-taking live shows as “impossible to resist”. \n\nTickets $30 – Grab your tickets here.

SUMMARY:George Jackson & Brad Kolodner
DESCRIPTION:An evening of Old Time and Bluegrass music from the USA with George Jackson and Brad Kolodner. \nAt the heart of all traditional music lies two important coordinates\, the time and place of origin; objective definitions in the ever evolving aesthetics of folk music. These coordinates are the concepts explored with infinite new possibilities by New Zealand-born\, Nashville-based fiddler George Jackson and Baltimore based American banjoist Brad Kolodner. The two musicians met years ago in a late-night jam session at the hallowed Appalachian String Band Music Festival in West Virginia and have since formed a musical bond that runs deep\, across continents and through a number of recorded projects. From the moment the fiddle bow hits the strings and the fingers grasp the fretboard\, George and Brad are locked in\, weaving their way through ancient melodies made new again. From trance-inducing moody original tunes to classic barnburners\, their show has something for serious or casual folk music fans alike. They play with a mischievous curiosity that keeps listeners on the edge of their seats wondering where they’ll go next. \nTraveling has been a way of life for George\, who was born to musician parents in Christchurch\, New Zealand. He spent the better part of his childhood living and touring around in a house bus with his family band Fiddlesticks. Moving to Australia as a teen he performed across the country in bluegrass bands and won the Australian National Bluegrass Fiddle Championship three times. An avid student of American fiddle styles\, Jackson eventually made his way to Nashville\, TN where he now lives and works. He performs as a band leader and fiddler for hire with artists such as The Jacob Jolliff Band\, Jake Blount and Tall Poppy String Band and has released three solo albums of fiddle tunes to acclaim in the USA\, where some of his compositions are now close to standard jam repertoire across the continent. \nGrowing up in a musical family\, Brad was exposed to folk music from birth. His father Ken Kolodner is a renowned hammered dulcimer player and fiddler who toured for many years in the folk trio Helicon. When Brad picked up the banjo as a teen\, everything started to click into place. Since then\, he’s charted a path centered on performing\, recording\, broadcasting and community organizing. He’s an acclaimed clawhammer banjo player who performs with the chart-topping Irish\, Old-Time\, Bluegrass fusion quartet Charm City Junction. He’s recorded four albums of Old-Time and original music with his father Ken under the name Ken & Brad Kolodner. \nLINKS\nyoutube.com/watch?v=oF9R…\nyoutube.com/watch?v=K2ta…\ngeorgejacksonmusic.com/\nbradkolodner.com/ \nKey information \nLocation: Indoor event – Ballroom\nSeating: provided\nDoors open: 7pm\nMusic starts: 7:30pm\nPrice: $25\nPurchase tickets: HERE\nDrinks: Fairfield will operate a bar. SUMMARY:Nelson City’s Autobiography in Buildings with Christopher Vine
DESCRIPTION:Fairfield House warmly invites you to join us on: \nSunday 9 June 2024 2pm \nNelson City’s Autobiography in Buildings. \nA virtual stroll around our City with Christopher Vine.. an illustrated talk. \nTo be followed by the unveiling of Christopher’s mural for Fairfield and afternoon tea. \n“During the 60 years I have made Nelson my home\, recording and writing about its buildings\, the truth of Ruskin’s view that nations inadvertently write their own autobiography in their art and architecture has become evident. Even at the scale of one small city\, I think it is possible to draw conclusions about society from early colonial times to present merely by looking around us. As a former conservation architect in England\, I have written many illustrated articles about New Zealand since arriving in 1964\, culminating in material for my book\, Nelson Observed”. \nTickets here – $10. RSVP essential. \nIf the $10 entry fee is a barrier to you attending we still welcome you. Please get in touch with Catherine on 027 467 2127 to book your place.

SUMMARY:Takadimi
DESCRIPTION:Takadimi\, led by Manjit Singh\, is a cross-cultural musical odyssey merging ancient classical Indian\, jazz\, and world music forms in the space of a single performance. \nCollaborating with exceptional musicians from both New Zealand (Nathan Haines\, Avantdale Bowling Club) and India (Taufiq Qureshi\, Dilshad Khan) Takadimi’s compositions represent a fusion of cultures\, bridging gaps between Eastern & Western genres. \nManjit Singh\, recognized for his innovative arrangements\, received high acclaim for his integration of Indian classical elements in a nominated song for the prestigious 2019 Silver Scrolls. Having studied under the tutelage of tabla maestro Fazal Qureshi from Mumbai and holding degrees in Musicology and Jazz\, Manjit Singh is globally respected as a hybrid musician\, bridging the worlds of Indian and mainstream music. \nHis passion for teaching Indian classical music led him to being a leader in the New Zealand Indian community and\, more recently\, as a faculty member at the University of Auckland. \nTogether\, Manjit Singh and Daljeet Kaur form the soul of Takadimi\, adding an extra layer of richness between calming and electric modals. One moment\, the audience may be lulled into a trance by the ethereal Hindustani vocals and sitar playing of Daljeet; their souls carried away on waves of harmonic sound. And in the next instant\, the room pulses with vibrant energy as Manjit takes the stage\, his fingers dancing across the tabla\, playing melodic rhythms faster than one can keep pace of\, yet perfectly synchronized to the tight Jazz progressions of his fellow talented band-members. \nWith their distinctive sound and a shared vision of bringing Indian arts into the mainstream\, Takadimi invites listeners on a musical journey that celebrates the power of cultural collaboration. \nDOORS OPEN – 7PM \nMUSIC – 7:30PM \nTICKETS – https://events.humanitix.com/takadimi \nFB: facebook.com/takadiminz\nInstagram: instagram.com/takadiminz/
