SUMMARY:Rennie Pearson. Traditional Celtic Music
DESCRIPTION:Grounded in the Celtic musical traditions\, Rennie Pearson takes the listener on a journey through history\, weaving together tunes and songs and the tales that accompany them to create an intricate and varied show. His engaging stage presence and storytelling opens the door for audiences to connect with the music\, which he plays on the wooden flute\, Irish tin whistles\, guitar\, bodhran and voice. \nRennie grew up in Wellington with Celtic music in his blood. Having heard the traditional music of Ireland and Scotland on his parents CDs as a baby\, he grew up knowing he just had to learn to play like this. He picked up the flute at age 8\, learning by ear in Irish sessions under the guidance of Galway born flute player Pat Higgins. With Irish music as the cornerstone of his knowledge\, he then went on to delve deep into the traditional music of Scotland and maritime Canada\, on the way gaining proficiency in a wide range of different instruments. \nRennie has made a name for himself in the Irish music scene of New Zealand and Australia. He has performed with great traditional musicians such as John Carty\, Catherine MacEvoy\, James Kelly and more. He has taught throughout New Zealand and internationally\, both solo and with a range of other musicians such as Rob Zielinski\, Oscar West and Gillian Boucher. Most recently he taught wooden flute at Ceol Aneas (New Zealand’s Irish Music School)\, accompaniment at ScotStrings Camp (New Zealand Scottish Music School) and traditional music workshops at Auckland and Whare Flat Folk Festivals. In 2021 he toured with Irish dance sensation\, Celitica\, as their flute and bodhran player. He also released an album with fiddler and small-piper\, Oscar West as the kiwi folk duo\, ‘Polytropos’\, in 2020..At the age of 19\, he studied with wooden flute virtuoso Chris Norman on the east coast of Canada\, as a live-in apprentice. He has since taught alongside Chris at many Boxwood Festivals in New Zealand and Australia on guitar\, whistle and flute. \nNumbers are limited essential to book TICKETS \nhttps://www.renniepearsonmusic.com/ \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJiTbENs5vM&t=119s&ab_channel=RenniePearson

SUMMARY:Lake South: The Light You Throw. album release tour
DESCRIPTION:Home Alone Music is proud to present ‘The light you throw’ – the third album from Te Whanganui-a-Tara based electricUTOPIA songwriter Lake South. Slated for release on September 17\, the album was written in the midst of Aotearoa’s Level-4 lockdown ( that;s the 2020 one) and recorded at a rented house in Waikawa beach. From the anxiety of the pandemic comes a record full of hope\, joy and defiance. Expertly crafted odes to friends\, the cities they live in\, and the futures they strive for.\nThese are songs to be experienced live and Lake South has the band to make them pop. Theo Sekeris (Ras Judah\, Rubita) is on bass\, Eddie Crawshaw (Sheep Dog & Wolf\, Bonaparte) hits rhythm\, and Penelope Esplin (French for Rabbits\, Grawlixes) adds beatific harmonies and synths.\nThis collection follows 2017’s ‘If You’re Born On An Island the Ocean Heals You’ and the follow-up\, ‘Wellington | Te Upoko O Te Ika’\, in late 2019. Both records have been critically acclaimed with Graham Reid calling Lake an electro-folk postcard poet of his doubting generation. \nPraise for Lake South’s previous work:\n“A titanic talent” – The Revue.ca\n“It’s a ripper!” – Grant Smithies\n“Earnest and acutely observed nostalgia turns into uplifting anthems time and again” – Alex Behan (Sunday Star Times)\n“Gorgeous pop gems…deft\, heartfelt\, funny.” – NZ Musician Magazine \nLISTEN \nTickets @ undertheradar

SUMMARY:Mama's Got the Blues
DESCRIPTION:Izzy Miller Bell & Susan Leigh Grant \nUrban folk & country blues\, a little bit of jazz and a whole lot of Celtic soul that is what these two vintage blues mamas bring to the table\, delivering a slick program of original composition\, eloquent Dylan arrangements and classic jazz and blues by the likes of Billie Holiday\, Fats Waller Josh White\, Johnny Cash and more. \nIzzy Miller Bell aka Ma Bell heralded to be one of NZ’s most musical Scottish imports (NZMM July 2003) arrived on our shores in the late eighties and has gone on to establish a solid respected reputation as a folk blues jazz singer songwriter\, performance artist and producer\, the face behind Miller Bell Productions & The Pop-Up Concert Series. \nSusan Leigh Grant is the other half of this impressive musical partnership. She is a two-time Gore Golden Guitar award winner who plays a mean slide guitar while at the same time bringing an innovative sensitive approach to the wooden body finger-style making her the perfect accompaniment to the gutsy chocolate hazelnut voice of Ma Bell.\n This is a special musical partnership not to be missed. \nReserve your ticket

Having lived\, performed and recorded in the UK\, Europe\, the USA and South America\, he brings a wealth of experience and an international vision to his music. \nWith a classical background in piano and cello\, Duncan studied jazz with the very best of his native New Zealand at Massey University\, Wellington. The following years found his arrangements on the multi-platinum selling pop albums of Bic Runga and at huge outdoor events such as Symphony Under the Stars in Auckland and the official millenium celebrations in Wellington. He then spent 8 years based in London\, performing all over the U.K. and Europe including at Ronnie Scott’s\, Pizza Express Dean St\, Wembley Stadium\, Lords\, Queens Club\, Blenheim Palace\, jazz festivals in Warsaw\, Portugal\, Ireland\, the Netherlands and rock festivals such as Bestival on the Isle of Wight.\nAfter a stint playing rock and blues in Lousiana\, USA he moved to Lima\, Peru where the music of South America captured his imagination. SUMMARY:Songwriters Soirée .. O & The Mo & Edward Castelow
DESCRIPTION:As the winter kicks into gear well proper this July\, two of our nation’s most charming acts are teaming up for a cute run of shows to warm the cockles of your hearts in the form of the Songwriters Soirèe. Bask in the candle-lit vibrancy and indie folk stylings of renowned Tāmaki Makaurau sweetheart Edward Castelow and Nelson/Põneke dreamboats O & The Mo when they merge for a special set of intimate performances. The Songwriters Soirèe will see both acts in stripped back mode\, sharing the performance space in tandem and entwining their sets song for song while discussing themes and offering insight into the material or it’s inspiration along the way. \nEdward Castelow (of Dictaphone Blues) released his debut album Mirth in February 2021. The album features a cast of NZ musicians\, including Anna Coddington\, Julia Deans & Ben Sinclair (The Beths)\, and is a tender collection of personal tales and reflections delivered through sultry baritones\, touches of folk strumming paired with a slight psychedelic undercurrent. Castelow’s sound is both unique and vibrant\, whilst his latest songwriting takes a turn toward more personal subjects such as life and death\, love and loss and the mirth within them all. \nOriginally hailing from Wellington\, O & The Mo now keep their fingers on the music pulse from their base in Sunny Nelson. In the wake of global lockdowns\, lessons and learnings\, the duo released their debut album In Transit in November 2020. An album which reflects on the challenge and beauty of learning to stay still. In Transit is as much of a political commentary as it is an exploration of love and life. With a few unreleased songs up their sleeves\, O & The Mo will enchant you with their stripped back romantic melodies and unique baritone guitar. \nBe sure to wander in from the cold and into the Songwriters Soirèe for a special dose of winter comfort guaranteed to fill up your cup. \nTickets @ undertheradar \nedwardcastelow.bandcamp.com/album/mirth \noandthemo.bandcamp.com/album/in-transit

Legally blind since birth\, she is a tireless advocate for accessibility issues and the healing and transformative power of creativity.\nA vocal and song-writing coach to many of our best known artists\, Caitlin Smith combines poetry and music in unforgettable performances that include her original compositions as well as covers penned by her musical heroes. \nLance McNicoll has been a professional musician in the Auckland scene for many years. \nSteve Cournane is a drummer and composer who began playing with the Alpaca Brothers in Dunedin\, in 1984. Steve won a Tui for NZ Jazz album of the year in 2002 for the album Stereoscope by CLBob. This group released three albums and performed relentlessly around the country over a ten-year period. In 2007 he moved to Lima\, Peru\, where he survived as a musician while studying the coastal Afro-Criolla music for another seven years. SUMMARY:LIFE'S ABSURDITIES & OTHER STORIES
DESCRIPTION:Nelson resident Mary Glaisyer is old. Very old. Well 70 something\, if you really want to know. And she likes telling stories. She’s always told them. It’s one her raison d’etres\, (if you can have that in plural) and she has a few. Some of her stories are funny\, some are downright peculiar and some are just … well just Mary\, if you know what I mean. Come along for an evening of non-stop enjoyment. \nMary Glaisyer began performing standup comedy in her 70’s. She is by far the oldest beginner in the standup scene in Nelson\, which has only been going about three years\, mainly at the Liquid Bar in Bridge Street. \nMary was keen to try out a storytelling/standup show of her own\, so Fairfield House is hosting two performances with pianist Virginia Ward playing between Mary’s “sets.” \nWe need YOU to be in the audience! All proceeds will be going to the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust\, which “aims to increase the supply of quality\, affordable\, healthy homes and housing services for people/whanau in need.” \nDATES: Saturday April 10 – 7pm & Sunday April 11 – 2pm\nTICKETS: $10 www.trybooking.co.nz/GUO\nLimited seating. DESCRIPTION:Wellington’s ethereal dream-pop gems French for Rabbits are pairing up with Terrible Sons for a weekend away in the South Island. They will present their dreamy\, perfectly-paired music to lucky audiences in Nelson\, Blenheim and Onekaka\, before French for Rabbits head off to perform at Wanaka’s Festival of Colour.\n_______________\nFrench for Rabbits released a handful of singles in 2020 – including the soaring chamber pop of ‘The Dark Arts’ in December which is the first single from their forthcoming album (due out later in 2021). On the tour they will be presenting new material alongside their intimately beautiful collection of previous releases.\nThe band are known for their welcoming presence\, animated banter and effortless songwriting – that spans both the intimate and expansive.\n______________\nTerrible Sons released their much anticipated EP ‘Mass’ in February. Having racked up over 18 million streams on previous singles\, it may come as a surprise that the Nettwerk-signed duo from Christchurch have never toured. The duo consists of LA Mitchell (Fly my Pretties) and Matt Barus (The Dukes).\nAbout Mass: “ ……. a stark\, quiet collection of deeply romantic songs that hark back to the sweeping indie glory of Kings of Convenience and Feist. It’s the kind of music that feels destined to soundtrack the idiosyncratic indie cinema of the mid-2000s. It’s luscious\, organic and so\, so intimate” – Tone Deaf https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IprVIIbi6lE) \nEarlybird Tickets $25 at undertheradar\n Door sales $30;\n doors open 7pm; concert 7.30pm.
