 EMERALDS & GREENSTONE
Emeralds
& Greenstone are a folk fusion band, whose "indigi-folk" blends Maori and
Celtic musical instruments and styles into a powerful, evocative musical
experience. Traditional songs and chants in Maori, English, Irish and Scots
Gaelic are woven into the band's contemporary sounds coloured with jazz, blues
and pop... Think the folk-rock adventure of Fairport Convention meets the
exquisite arrangements of Madredeus with a real New Zealand
feel!
The
lineup includes: Ariana Tikao (vocals, taonga puoro/Maori instruments,
dulcimer); Laura Tomlin (vocals, keyboard, tinwhistle, flute); Argène
Montgomery-Hönger (bodhràn, tin whistle, ukulele, vocals); Jon Hooker (guitars,
ukulele); James Wilkinson (guitar, bass, vocals).
The
Fairfield House concert will kick off their NZ tour scheduled for February and
March 2012, before Emeralds & Greenstone take their music to international
audiences in July/August 2012.
"a
real musical gem...It was not only the quality of the vocals that stood out, but
the quality and sensitivity of the songwriting with this Maori-Celtic mix" - The
Courier Mail Online (Brisbane)
"Across
The Seas was inspired by the crossing to Stewart Island but would be as
evocative of the trip to Aran." - fRoots album review (UK)
"Ethereal...a
spellbinding re-working of traditional songs along with their own contemporary
offerings...they ooze character, cross-cultural credentials, multi-lingualism
and instrumentalism... colourful songs and tunes which transport, enthral and
inspire" - The Garden Sessions (UK) www.myspace.com/emeraldsandgreenstone Friday 3 February 8pm $15 email & phone reserves encouraged, ph. 5483640 or fairfieldnelson@paradise.net.nz Cash Bar available. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Friday 10 February
JOHANNA MYSTERY
Since bursting onto the
New Zealand music scene in 2010, multi-instrumentalist Johanna Mystery
has already performed with award winning singer-songwriter Jess Chambers
(The Woolshed Sessions), as well as performed and recorded with a
string of established New Zealand musicians, including virtuoso
guitarist Justin Firefly Clarke (Fly My Pretties IV, The Woolshed
Sessions), and Nigel Collins (sole accompanying musician for Flight of
The Conchords). As a solo act, Johanna Mystery's music, with its expressive
combination of Pacific Island roots, and acoustic folk/soul styles,
draws in and holds the audience in captive silence. When performing
with her band, experienced drummer and multi-instrumentalist Ben Lemi
Wood (Hikoikoi, Hannah Howes, Jump St), and hotly demanded jazz bassist
Will Sklenars (Jump St), forge together a solid rhythm section, adding
alternative rock elements to Johanna Mystery≠s catchy hooks. Described as being reminiscent of the organ-infused sounds of The
Doors, mixed with the edgy and soulful vibes of Amy Winehouse, Tracey
Chapman, and Joan Armitrading, Johanna Mystery and her band are fast
developing a reputation for their dynamic performances. Johanna Mystery will be performing with
- Ben Wood: Drums, guitar
- Sage Kamaru: Bass, Drums
- Will Sklenars: Bass
- JoHanna Mystery: Vocs, Keys, Guitar, Clarinet
as part of her SOUTH ISLAND TOUR in Fairfield House Ballroom Friday 10 February 2012 8pm
